Iruppu Falls

The water tumbles over rocks in several streams into a wide pool, and a viewing platform lets you enjoy the spray safely. The flow is strongest from July to October. Rocks are slippery and there are no lifeguards, so stay in shallow areas and follow forest staff instructions. It is one of the finest waterfalls in coorg.

Rameshwara Temple
At the base of the hill, the Rameshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and draws huge crowds during Shivaratri, when devotees bathe in the falls before worship. A small village market is held near the temple on Sundays. Visit the temple on the way back from the falls.
Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Peak
The falls lie inside the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, a stretch of shola forest and grassland on the Karnataka and Kerala border. The brahmagiri trek to the peak is a full-day guided hike that requires forest department permission and is subject to seasonal closures. Check the official booking system well in advance.
Nagarhole National Park
About 20 to 25 kilometres away, Nagarhole is one of India's best tiger reserves, with elephants, gaur, deer and leopards along its forest roads. A nagarhole safari must be booked through the official forest portal. Even without a safari, the drive through the park on the Kutta road often brings wildlife sightings.
Kutta and the Coffee Estates
Kutta is a small border town surrounded by coffee and pepper plantations, with homestays offering estate walks and traditional Kodava meals such as pandi curry and kadambuttu. It is a peaceful base for exploring south Coorg.
Thirunelli Temple
Just across the border in Wayanad, the ancient thirunelli temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu sits in a forest valley below Brahmagiri, and the nearby Papanasini stream is sacred to pilgrims. Adding it requires a Kerala permit, which we arrange.
Namdroling Monastery, Bylakuppe
A detour from Hunsur via Periyapatna leads to Bylakuppe, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. The Namdroling Monastery, known as the Golden Temple, has huge gilded Buddha statues and colourful prayer halls. It fits well on the return drive.
Mysore Palace
On the way, the Mysore Palace is worth a short stop. The Indo-Saracenic palace is lavishly decorated inside and is lit with thousands of bulbs on Sunday evenings and festival nights.

The falls are about a kilometre from the Rameshwara Temple along a paved, stepped forest path. Most people take 20 to 30 minutes at an easy pace. Wear shoes with good grip, especially in the monsoon when the steps are wet.
