Kalyana Mahal and Royal Enclosure
At the foot of Rajagiri, the white seven-storey Kalyana Mahal with its pyramid-shaped tower is the most photographed building in the complex. Around it lie the remains of palaces, stables, an elephant tank, a gymnasium and water tanks, showing how the fort worked as a self-sufficient town.
Venkataramana Temple
This large sixteenth-century Nayak temple stands just outside the palace area, with a tall gopuram and finely carved pillars. It is no longer in active worship, which gives it a quiet, atmospheric feel, and the carvings of Ramayana scenes reward a slow walk.
Sadat Ullah Khan Mosque
Built in the early eighteenth century during the Nawab period, this mosque sits near the palace area and reflects another chapter in the fort's long history, which saw the Konar chiefs, Vijayanagara Nayaks, Marathas, Mughals, Nawabs, French and British.
Chandrayandurg and the Fort Walls
The third hill, Chandrayandurg, completes the triangle of defences but is not usually open for climbing. The walls and the moat that link all three hills can be seen along the approach roads and from both summits, giving a sense of the fort's vast scale.
Singavaram Ranganatha Cave Temple
A few kilometres from Gingee, this rock-cut shrine holds a large reclining image of Lord Ranganatha carved into the hill, with steps leading up to it. Local tradition links the deity closely to the Gingee rulers, and the hilltop views are lovely.
Melmalayanur Angalamman Temple
About 20 kilometres from Gingee, the melmalayanur angalamman temple is a major pilgrimage centre that draws very large crowds on new moon nights. Visit on a regular day if you prefer a calmer darshan.
Tiruvannamalai
About 37 kilometres west, Tiruvannamalai is home to the vast Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the five elemental Shiva shrines, representing fire. The fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is generally open from morning until evening, with separate tickets for the main hills. The gingee fort timings and fees can change, so we recommend checking before travel. Starting the Rajagiri climb by late morning leaves enough time to return comfortably.
The Rajagiri climb involves steep stone steps and rocky paths and usually takes one to two hours up and back. It suits reasonably fit adults and older children. Krishnagiri hill is shorter and easier, and the inner fort and Kalyana Mahal at ground level need no climbing.
