Thirunelli Temple
About 10 kilometres from Tholpetty, the ancient Maha Vishnu temple at Thirunelli stands in a forest valley beneath the Brahmagiri hills, and it is often called the Kashi of the South. The nearby Papanasini stream is believed to wash away sins, and many families perform ancestral rites here. The temple's granite architecture and forest setting make it deeply atmospheric, especially in the early morning.
Pakshipathalam
High in the Brahmagiri hills above Thirunelli, Pakshipathalam is a cluster of huge boulders and caves that shelter many bird species. It is reached by a long forest trek that requires permission and a guide from the forest department, and it is one of the most rewarding adventures in Wayanad for fit travellers.
Kuruva Island
About 20 kilometres from Tholpetty, Kuruva is a group of uninhabited, forested river islands on the Kabini. Visitors cross by bamboo raft and walk through the islands among orchids, herbs and river birds. Entry numbers are limited and the islands may close during the monsoon, so check before you plan the day.
Kabini Backwaters and Nagarhole
On the Tholpetty route, the Kabini reservoir on the Karnataka side is one of the best wildlife destinations in India, famous for large elephant gatherings on its banks in the dry season and for occasional sightings of the black panther. Edakkal Caves

Chembra Peak
Near Meppadi in southern Wayanad, Chembra is the highest peak in the district, famous for the heart-shaped lake on its slopes. The trek requires forest department permission and a guide, and access may be restricted in some seasons, so check the current status before you go.
