Malpe Beach and Sea Walk
Malpe beach is the departure point for the island ferry and a lively beach in its own right, with water sports, food stalls and wide golden sand. The malpe sea walk, a promenade stretching out into the sea, is the best place to watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea.
Udupi Sri Krishna Matha
Founded by the philosopher Sri Madhvacharya in the thirteenth century, this is one of the most important Krishna temples in South India. Devotees view the deity through the Kanakana Kindi, a small window associated with the poet-saint Kanakadasa. The temple kitchens are the origin of the famous Udupi vegetarian cuisine.
Manipal - End Point and Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village
Just above Udupi, the university town of Manipal offers End Point, a viewpoint over the Swarna river valley, and the Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village, where traditional homes from across Karnataka and neighbouring regions have been rebuilt and preserved.
Delta Beach, Kodi Bengre
A narrow spit of sand where the Suvarna river meets the Arabian Sea. With calm backwater on one side and waves on the other, it is one of the most photogenic spots near Malpe and much quieter than the main beach.
Kaup Beach and Lighthouse
About 13 kilometres south of Udupi, Kaup has a tall lighthouse dating from the early twentieth century, set on rocks above the beach. The climb to the top gives wide views of the coastline, and the beach below is clean and uncrowded.
Padubidri Blue Flag Beach
Padubidri's End Point beach holds Blue Flag certification for cleanliness, safety and environmental management. It is well kept, with lifeguards and facilities, and makes a relaxed stop on the drive between Mangaluru and Udupi.
Maravanthe Beach
About 50 kilometres north of Udupi, the highway at Maravanthe runs on a narrow strip between the Arabian Sea on one side and the Souparnika river on the other — one of the most striking drives on the Karnataka coast.

Sakleshpur is the "Poor Man's Ooty", a cool hill town surrounded by coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations. Just off the highway, Tipu Sultan's star-shaped Manjarabad Fort gives sweeping views over the hills. This is the last proper halt before the ghat, and a good place for coffee.

The bangalore to malpe distance is about 415 kilometres via Hassan, the Shiradi Ghat, Mangaluru and Udupi, which takes 8 to 9 hours of driving. From Malpe, the ferry to St. Mary's Island takes 20 to 30 minutes. We recommend reaching Udupi on day one and visiting the island the next morning.
Your cab drops you at the Malpe ferry point, where tickets are sold for the boats to the island. The cab waits or returns at the agreed time. Ferry tickets are not included in the cab fare.
Ferries usually run from October to May during daytime hours and are suspended in the monsoon, roughly June to September, for safety. St marys island boat timings can change with weather and sea conditions, so check at the jetty on the day. Visitors are not allowed to stay overnight on the island.
Fares start from around Rs 15 per km for an AC sedan, with SUVs and luxury cars priced higher. The fare includes base fare, fuel and driver allowance. Tolls, parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours. No interstate tax applies on this route.

The standard route is the Shiradi Ghat on NH75. If it is closed or restricted, particularly during the monsoon, our drivers use the Charmadi Ghat or the Sampaje Ghat via Madikeri instead. We check conditions before departure.
Three days is ideal: one day to drive down, one for St. Mary's Island, Malpe and Udupi, and one for Manipal, Kaup or a temple visit before returning. A four-day trip lets you add Kollur, Murudeshwar or Karkala.
