Pancha Rathas
Five monolithic shrines, each carved from a single outcrop of rock in the seventh century and shaped like a temple chariot. Although named after the Pandavas and Draupadi, they have no link to the Mahabharata; the names came much later. Arjuna's Penance
One of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world, carved across two huge adjoining boulders and filled with gods, sages, hunters, elephants and even a cat mimicking an ascetic. Scholars still debate whether it shows Arjuna's penance or the descent of the Ganga, and a natural cleft between the boulders once carried water to complete the scene. Every December and January the Mamallapuram Dance Festival is staged in front of it.
Krishna's Butter Ball
A giant granite boulder about six metres high, balanced on a smooth slope at an angle that looks impossible. Legend says a Pallava king and later a British governor tried to move it with elephants and failed. It is the most photographed spot in town after the Shore Temple, and the lawns around it are pleasant in the late afternoon.
Mahishasuramardini and Varaha Cave Temples
Rock-cut cave temples on the hill behind the town, with some of the finest Pallava panels anywhere. The Mahishasuramardini cave shows Durga on her lion battling the buffalo demon, facing a calm reclining Vishnu on the opposite wall. The Varaha cave depicts Vishnu as a boar lifting the earth goddess. Both are short climbs from the Butter Ball.
Mahabalipuram Lighthouse and Olakkaneeswara Temple
The lighthouse on the hilltop is open to visitors and gives the best view over the town, the monuments and the coastline. Right beside it stands the Olakkaneeswara Temple, a Pallava shrine whose roof once served as a lighthouse itself, with fires lit to guide ships into the port centuries ago.
Tiger Cave, Saluvankuppam
About five kilometres north, a rock-cut shrine whose entrance is framed by a ring of carved tiger or yali heads. It sits in a quiet grove by the sea, far less crowded than the main sites. Excavations nearby uncovered a Murugan temple partly swept by the 2004 tsunami, adding to the story of a coastline that keeps revealing old structures.
Madras Crocodile Bank
Around fourteen kilometres north on the East Coast Road, this reptile conservation centre was founded in 1976 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker. It holds crocodiles, alligators, gharials, turtles and snakes from around the world, and is the stop children remember most from a Mahabalipuram trip.
