Krishnagiri is the "Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu", and from April to July roadside stalls sell Alphonso, Banganapalli and Totapuri mangoes at farm prices. The Krishnagiri Reservoir and the hill fort of Syed Basha Malai are close to the highway. This is the usual breakfast stop, and the highway restaurants here are well equipped for families. Gateway to Hogenakkal, the Niagara of India
The highway continues south through dry farmland and granite outcrops. Dharmapuri is the "Gateway to Hogenakkal, the Niagara of India", the famous waterfalls on the Kaveri where coracle rides take you right up to the spray. Hogenakkal lies about 45 kilometres to the west and makes a good addition on the return journey. Dharmapuri was once known as Thagadur, the seat of the Sangam-era chieftain Adhiyaman, and the Theerthamalai hill temple is also nearby. Elapsed time: about 2 hours 45 minutes.
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
Salem is the "Steel City of Tamil Nadu", home to the Salem Steel Plant, and the "Gateway to Yercaud", the hill station just 30 kilometres up the Shevaroy Hills. It is also famous for mangoes, sago production and handloom silk. The highway bypasses the city centre, but Salem has excellent restaurants if you want an early lunch. Yes. Kolli Hills is in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu, so a Karnataka to Tamil Nadu permit is required, checked at the Attibele border near Hosur. We arrange it before departure and bill it at actuals. A separate forest entry fee is collected at the Karavalli check post at the foot of the hills and is paid by the group.
It is not practical. The round trip is around 580 kilometres, and with the ghat climb, the Agaya Gangai steps and the return descent, it would mean 14 or more hours on the road and a late night finish. We recommend at least one night on the hills, and two nights for a relaxed trip.
The falls are reached by descending roughly a thousand stone steps from the car park near the Arapaleeswarar temple. Going down takes about 30 minutes and climbing back up about an hour. It suits reasonably fit visitors; others can enjoy Masila falls, which needs only a short walk. Access to Agaya Gangai may be closed during very heavy rain.
September to February is ideal, with the waterfalls full after the monsoon and pleasant temperatures on the plateau. March to May is warmer but still cooler than the plains. The Valvil Ori festival, held every August, brings cultural events and crowds. Early mornings can be misty on the ghat, so we time the climb for good visibility.
