Mahmud Gawan Madrasa
Built around 1472 by Mahmud Gawan, the Persian scholar who served as prime minister of the Bahmani court, this was one of the great colleges of the medieval Deccan, with lecture halls, a library and a mosque. Although partly ruined, its surviving minaret still shows traces of colourful glazed tiles. It stands in the old town between the fort and the Chaubara clock tower.
Bahmani Tombs at Ashtur
A few kilometres east of the city, the domed bahmani tombs hold the remains of the Bahmani sultans. The tomb of Ahmad Shah Wali is the most striking, with painted interiors and gold and vermilion calligraphy. The caretaker often uses a mirror to light up the faded paintings. Late afternoon light makes the domes glow.
Chaukhandi of Hazrat Khalil Ullah
Close to the Ashtur tombs, this octagonal mausoleum of a Sufi saint sits on a raised platform reached by a flight of steps. Its carved granite and calligraphy panels are finely detailed, and the site is calm and well kept.
Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib
One of the most important Sikh shrines in South India, gurudwara nanak jhira sahib marks the spot associated with Guru Nanak's visit to Bidar, where a spring of fresh water is believed to have emerged. The present building dates to 1948, and the sacred tank, langar and museum draw pilgrims from across the country. Cover your head and remove your footwear before entering.
Narasimha Jharni Cave Temple
At the narasimha jharni temple, devotees wade through a roughly 300-metre water-filled tunnel inside the Manichoola hills to reach the shrine of Lord Narasimha. The water is waist-deep in places and bats roost on the ceiling, which makes the visit memorable. Carry a change of clothes and expect queues on weekends.
Papnash Shiva Temple
This temple beside a spring-fed tank is linked by legend to Lord Rama, who is said to have installed the linga here. It is especially busy during Shivaratri and is a peaceful stop on the western edge of the city.

Bidriware is the craft that gives Bidar its name across India, with fine silver wire inlaid into a blackened zinc alloy to make vases, boxes and jewellery. Small family workshops in the old city welcome visitors, and buying directly from artisans supports this Bahmani-era tradition.
Basavakalyan
About 80 kilometres from Bidar, Basavakalyan is where the twelfth-century reformer Basavanna built the Anubhava Mantapa, often called the first parliament of ideas.
