Bekal Fort
The reason most people make this trip. Built around 1650 by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi dynasty, bekal fort spreads across roughly 40 acres and is the largest fort in Kerala. Its keyhole-shaped laterite walls rise straight out of the sea on three sides, and the observation tower at the centre gives a view along the entire curve of the coast. A Hanuman temple stands at the entrance and an old mosque from the Tipu Sultan period lies close by. Arrive around 4:00 PM, walk the ramparts as the light softens and stay for sunset over the western bastions.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Toy Town of Karnataka
The day starts on the Bangalore–Mysore Expressway, and leaving at 5:00 AM means you are past Kengeri before the city wakes up. The first landmark is Channapatna, the Toy Town of Karnataka. For generations its artisans have turned soft ivory wood into lacquered toys coloured with vegetable dyes, a craft traditionally traced to the time of Tipu Sultan and now protected with a GI tag. The expressway bypasses the town, but the service road exit takes only a few minutes, and a set of Channapatna toys makes a far better souvenir than anything sold at a highway plaza. Elapsed time: about one hour.

Sugar City of Karnataka
Twenty minutes on, Maddur is the home of the Maddur Vada, the crisp onion-and-semolina fritter that almost every traveller on this road stops for. A breakfast halt here is practically a tradition. Mandya, a little further, is the Sugar City of Karnataka, ringed by sugarcane fields watered by the Cauvery canals from the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir. Watch for the small jaggery units along the service roads. Elapsed time: about one hour forty minutes.

Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Srirangapatna, the Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan, sits on an island in the Cauvery and served as the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan until the siege of 1799. The Ranganathaswamy Temple and Daria Daulat Bagh are minutes from the highway. On a direct Bekal run most travellers do not stop long, but just after the island your driver takes the bypass towards Hunsur, which avoids Mysore city traffic and saves close to an hour. Elapsed time: about two hours.

Gateway to Coorg
Bylakuppe, the Mini Tibet of South India, is one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet, founded in the early 1960s. The Namdroling Monastery, better known as the Golden Temple, houses three gilded statues close to 18 metres tall, making it one of the most memorable stops of the drive. Just beyond, Kushalnagar is the Gateway to Coorg, with Nisargadhama and Dubare a short detour away. A 45-minute halt at the Golden Temple fits easily into the day. Elapsed time: about three hours forty-five minutes.

Scotland of India
Climbing through coffee and pepper estates shaded by silver oak, the road reaches Madikeri, the hill town at the heart of Coorg, often called the Scotland of India for its mist and rolling slopes. Raja's Seat, the garden viewpoint where the Kodava kings watched the sun set over the valleys, sits right in town, and Madikeri Fort with its old palace is a few minutes away. This is the natural lunch halt, and the Kodava pandi curry with akki roti in local restaurants is worth the stop. Elapsed time: about five hours.

Largest Fort in Kerala
Near Sullia the route leaves NH275 and crosses into Kerala, entering Kasaragod district, the Land of Seven Languages, where Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Beary, Marathi and Urdu are all spoken. Interstate tax is settled at the border and your driver handles the paperwork. The road winds through rubber estates, cashew groves and villages of red-tiled houses. Near Chattanchal the route joins NH66, the coastal highway, and the final stretch south brings Bekal into view, its fort walls dark against the sea. Elapsed time: eight to nine hours with halts.

The most popular booking: friend groups heading for Bekal's beaches and resorts, often with a night in Coorg on the way. The tempo traveller's shared music, lights and standing headroom make the long drive part of the fun.

The bekal fort distance from bangalore is approximately 390 kilometres via Mysore, Madikeri, the Sampaje ghat, Sullia and Kasaragod. The drive takes 8 to 9 hours including meal halts. The alternative route via Hassan, the Shiradi ghat and Mangaluru is around 420 kilometres.
Yes. Bekal is in Kerala, so a Karnataka to Kerala interstate permit is required for the tempo traveller, billed at actuals. We arrange it before departure, and the driver handles the check at the border.
Our 12 and 13 seater AC tempo travellers start from Rs 22 per km, with other sizes and luxury variants priced higher. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel and driver allowance, while toll, parking, Kerala interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra. Final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and every charge appears in the written quote you receive within 2 hours.
Yes. The route passes through Kushalnagar and Madikeri, so many groups break the journey with a night in Coorg, visiting Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat or Dubare on the way. The same tempo traveller and driver stay with the group throughout.
The fort is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is generally open during daytime hours, with an entry ticket. Timings can change, so we recommend checking before your visit. Late afternoon is the most popular time, as the fort and beach are at their most beautiful at sunset.
For 8 to 10 people, an 8, 9 or 10 seater executive tempo traveller with individual captain seats is very comfortable on a long drive. For 11 to 13, the 12 or 13 seater is our most popular and economical choice. For 14 to 18, the larger models give everyone a seat with luggage space. For bigger groups, we recommend a mini bus.
October to March is the best period, with pleasant weather, calm seas and the Theyyam season in the Kasaragod region. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain on the ghats and rough seas, though the coast is lush and green.
The sea along the Kasaragod coast can have strong currents, especially during the monsoon. Swim only in designated areas, follow lifeguard and local instructions, and avoid the water in rough conditions.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking, paid by UPI, bank transfer or card, with a receipt within 30 minutes. Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Between 48 and 72 hours the charge is 10 percent, between 24 and 48 hours 25 percent, between 12 and 24 hours 50 percent, and less than 12 hours 75 percent of the total fare.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover; passengers should arrange their own travel insurance if needed. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is police-verified. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel dates, pickup location, group size and preferred tempo traveller. A written quote follows within 2 hours.
