Bekal Beach Park, Pallikere
Right beside the fort, bekal beach is the easiest place to spend your first evening after the drive in. The shoreline is broad and clean, backed by lawns, walkways and snack stalls. The water can be rough, so swimming is best avoided, but it is ideal for a long walk with the fort walls towering at one end. Over the Christmas and New Year period the beach usually hosts the Bekal International Beach Festival, when the whole stretch fills with music, food stalls and handicrafts.
Kappil Beach and Kodi Cliff
About six kilometres north of the fort, Kappil is where you go for the sea without the crowds. A thin strip of backwater runs parallel to the shore, and the Kodi Cliff just behind it is one of the finest viewpoints on the Kasaragod coast, framing the beach in a long sweep. Facilities are limited, so carry water and ask your driver to wait at the approach road.
Valiyaparamba Backwaters
Around 30 kilometres south, the valiyaparamba backwaters form the largest backwater system in north Kerala, fed by four rivers and dotted with small green islands. It is far quieter than Alleppey, with more fishing canoes than houseboats. A half-day houseboat or country-boat cruise drifts past coconut groves, mangroves and fish farms, often with a Kerala lunch served on board. Chandragiri Fort

Roughly 30 kilometres away near Kumbla, this is the only lake temple in Kerala, and it is believed to be the original seat of Anantha Padmanabha, the deity of the great temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The shrine sits in the middle of a still, square lake reached by a narrow bridge, and it was long associated with Babiya, a crocodile that lived in the lake for decades. Dress conservatively and confirm darshan timings before setting out.
Ranipuram Hills
Often called the Ooty of Kerala, Ranipuram rises to about 750 metres in the Western Ghats, roughly 60 kilometres east of Bekal. Shola forest and open grassland make for a two to three hour trek to the summit, and on clear days the coast shows up as a thin line on the horizon. Start before 9:00 AM and wear proper walking shoes.
Nityananda Ashram and Hosdurg Fort, Kanhangad
Twelve kilometres south in Kanhangad, the Nityananda Ashram is known for its rock-cut meditation caves associated with Swami Nityananda. A short drive away, the round bastions of Hosdurg Fort, built by the Ikkeri Nayakas, still stand in the middle of town. Both fit easily into one morning, and Kanhangad has the best choice of restaurants and shops near Bekal.
Malik Deenar Mosque, Kasaragod
At Thalangara in Kasaragod town, about 16 kilometres north, the Malik Deenar Mosque is regarded as one of the oldest mosques in India, traditionally linked to the arrival of Malik ibn Dinar and his companions on the Malabar coast. The carved woodwork and traditional Kerala architecture are striking. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and check with the caretakers before entering.

Sugar City of Karnataka
Twenty minutes on, Maddur is the home of the Maddur Vada, the crisp onion-and-semolina fritter that almost every traveller on this road stops for. A breakfast halt here is practically a tradition. Mandya, a little further, is the Sugar City of Karnataka, ringed by sugarcane fields watered by the Cauvery canals from the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir. Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Srirangapatna, the Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan, sits on an island in the Cauvery and served as the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan until the siege of 1799. The Ranganathaswamy Temple and Daria Daulat Bagh are minutes from the highway. On a direct Bekal run most travellers do not stop long, but just after the island your driver takes the bypass towards Hunsur, which avoids Mysore city traffic and saves close to an hour. Gateway to Coorg
Bylakuppe, the Mini Tibet of South India, is one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet, founded in the early 1960s.
