Auroville Visitors Centre
The starting point for every visit. It has an information desk, a short introductory film and exhibitions about the township's history and ideals, along with boutiques selling handmade clothing, incense, pottery and organic products made in Auroville. The Banyan Tree and Amphitheatre
A giant banyan tree marks the geographical centre of Auroville, near Matrimandir. Close by, the amphitheatre holds an urn that contains soil brought from over a hundred countries and the states of India at the township's inauguration, a symbol of human unity.
Pitchandikulam Forest
Auroville's founders planted forests on land that was once badly eroded, and Pitchandikulam is one of the best examples of that work. Its trails and nature education programmes showcase the tropical dry evergreen forest native to this coast, along with medicinal plants and birdlife.
Auroville Beach
Also known locally as Repos Beach, auroville beach is a quiet stretch of sand a short drive from the township. It is popular for sunrise walks and seaside cafes. The sea here can be rough, so swimming is best avoided unless conditions are clearly safe.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry
Around twelve kilometres away in Puducherry, the ashram founded around Sri Aurobindo and The Mother is the spiritual root of Auroville. The flower-covered Samadhi in the courtyard is a place of silent tribute, and visitors are asked to keep quiet inside.
White Town and Promenade Beach
Puducherry's French Quarter has mustard-yellow colonial houses, tree-lined streets, bougainvillea and cafes. Rock Beach, along the Promenade, is ideal for an early morning or evening walk, and the Beach Road is closed to traffic at certain hours, making it pleasant for families.
Paradise Beach
South of Puducherry, Paradise Beach is reached by boat from the Chunnambar boat house through the backwaters. Its clean sand and calm atmosphere make it one of the best beach outings in the region.

Abode of the Fire Lingam
The great Arunachala hill appears long before you reach the town. Tiruvannamalai is home to the Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, where Shiva is worshipped as the element of fire. Its massive gopurams dominate the skyline, and the town is also known for the Ramana Maharshi Ashram and the Girivalam walk around the hill. It is the best lunch halt on the route.
Troy of the East
Gingee Fort spreads across three hills — Rajagiri, Krishnagiri and Chandrayandurg — linked by massive walls. The British once called it the "Troy of the East" because it was so hard to capture. Climbing Rajagiri takes time, but the lower complex with its granary, Kalyana Mahal and temples can be seen in an hour.
City of Dawn
The final stretch runs past cashew plantations and red-earth country. A short detour leads to Tiruvakkarai, known for the National Fossil Wood Park, where tree trunks turned to stone millions of years ago lie exposed, and for the Vakrakaliamman Temple.
