Anthargange Caves and Trek
Behind the temple, a steep trail climbs through huge granite boulders stacked into natural caves and tunnels. The route is about three kilometres and moderately demanding, and some passages mean crawling or squeezing between rocks. Guided treks, including the popular anthargange night trek, are run through the Karnataka forest department's eco-tourism booking system, and access rules change from time to time, so book through official channels and check current conditions. October to March is the best season for the anthargange trek.
Summit Views and Hill Villages
The top of the hill opens onto wide views of Kolar town, lakes and farmland, and sunrise here is the reason most groups start so early. Several small villages sit on the plateau, including Therahalli, and the walk past them shows a slice of rural Kolar life rarely seen from the highway. Carry water, a torch and sturdy shoes, and avoid carrying food openly.
Kolaramma Temple
Kolar's presiding goddess is worshipped in this ancient Dravida-style temple, renovated by Rajendra Chola in the tenth century and later by the Vijayanagara kings. Devotees view the fierce form of the goddess through a mirror rather than directly. A separate shrine to Chelamma, the scorpion goddess, is believed to protect against stings.
Someshwara Temple
A short drive from Kolaramma, the Someshwara Temple is a fine example of fourteenth-century Vijayanagara art, with carved pillars, a large kalyana mandapa and a tall entrance tower. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is a must for anyone interested in temple architecture.
Kotilingeshwara Temple
At Kammasandra, about 30 kilometres from Kolar, the kotilingeshwara temple is famous for its giant 108-foot linga and 35-foot Nandi, surrounded by lakhs of smaller lingas installed by devotees. Avani

KGF, around 30 kilometres from Kolar, was once one of the deepest gold mining operations in the world and gave the district its name as India's Golden Land. The road widens past Budigere Cross and the warehouses near the Hoskote toll. Beyond Hoskote, NH75 runs through open country with eucalyptus plantations, vegetable farms and granite outcrops. The toll plaza on this stretch is the main one on the route. Narasapura is home to a large KIADB industrial area with automobile and electronics plants, making it the industrial gateway to Kolar district. Elapsed time: about one hour ten minutes.
Land of Silk, Milk, Mango and Gold
The final highway stretch passes mango orchards and the silk and dairy villages that earned Kolar its title as the land of silk, milk, mango and gold. Kolar town has one of Asia's largest APMC markets, where tomato and vegetable trucks gather before dawn. Kolaramma and Someshwara temples are close to the centre, and the town has a tomb associated with the father of Hyder Ali. Most drivers leave the highway here and head south through town.
