Papanasam, whose name means the destruction of sins, sits where the Thamirabarani river leaves the hills. Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve
Tamil Nadu's first tiger reserve covers the eastern slopes of Agasthyamalai and protects tigers, leopards, elephants, the Nilgiri tahr and the lion-tailed macaque. The Mundanthurai side has a forest department interpretation centre and eco-tourism activities, which change with the season and need prior confirmation. Even the drive in, through teak and bamboo, is a good chance to see langurs and hornbills. It is an ideal stop for nature-minded families and school groups.
Manimuthar Dam and Falls
About 15 kilometres from Ambasamudram, Manimuthar Dam holds back a broad reservoir framed by forested hills, and the park below the dam is a pleasant evening stop. The falls further up lie inside the tiger reserve and access is controlled by the forest department, so check whether the road is open before you plan the day. The same road historically led up to the Manjolai tea estate hills, which also require forest permission.
Karaiyar Dam and Banatheertham Falls
Above Papanasam, the Karaiyar reservoir stretches deep into the hills, and when the forest department permits it, boats carry visitors across the water to Banatheertham Falls, a tall drop hidden in the forest. It is one of the most photogenic spots in the region. Servalar Dam sits nearby and is often combined in the same outing.
Courtallam Falls
Known as the "Spa of South India", Courtallam is about 50 kilometres north-west of Papanasam and has a series of waterfalls, including Main Falls, Five Falls and Old Courtallam, believed to carry herbal properties from the forests above. The season runs roughly June to September, when the Kerala monsoon breeze keeps the falls full and the air cool. It is an easy half-day extension for families.
Ponmudi Hills
On the Kerala side, near the road to Bonacaud, Ponmudi is a compact hill station at about 1,100 metres with tea gardens, winding hairpin bends and wide views over the Agasthyamalai forests. Trekkers often spend a night here after coming down from the peak. The road is narrow and best driven in daylight.
Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary
Neyyar sits on the south-western edge of the biosphere reserve, around 30 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram. The reservoir, boating, and the lion safari and crocodile rehabilitation areas associated with the sanctuary make it a relaxed day out, and the sanctuary shares its forest boundary with Agasthyarkoodam itself.

The first leg runs down Hosur Road past Electronic City and across the Attibele check post into Tamil Nadu, where your interstate permit is checked. Hosur was nicknamed "Little England" by the British, who liked its mild climate and set up a cattle farm and a retreat here. Today it is an industrial hub with automobile and electronics plants. This short stretch sets the pace for the whole day: before 6:00 AM it takes under an hour, while at 8:30 AM it can take twice as long. Drivers usually stop for tea after the check post.
The road passes Dharmapuri, the turnoff for Hogenakkal Falls, called the "Niagara of India" for the way the Kaveri crashes through rocky channels. Salem, the "Steel City of Tamil Nadu" and home to a major steel plant, sits in a bowl ringed by the Shevaroy Hills, with Yercaud up the slope. Your driver will take the bypass to save time. Egg City of India
Namakkal is the "Egg City of India", one of the largest poultry hubs in the country, and it is also a major centre for trucking and lorry body building. The town's landmark is the Anjaneyar Temple, where an 18-foot monolithic Hanuman stands open to the sky, facing the Narasimha shrine below the rock fort. A 30-minute stop is enough for a darshan and a stretch.
Temple City
Madurai is the "Temple City" and Thoonga Nagaram, the city that never sleeps, as well as the "City of Jasmine" for its famous Madurai malli flowers. The Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its towering gopurams and Hall of Thousand Pillars, is one of the great temple complexes of India, and the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a short walk away. Arriving in the early afternoon, this is the ideal overnight halt that turns a punishing single-day drive into two comfortable ones.
Halwa City
Tirunelveli is the "Halwa City", and the Iruttukadai halwa shop near the Nellaiappar Temple has a following across the state. The Nellaiappar Temple itself is known for its musical stone pillars. Across the Thamirabarani river, Palayamkottai has earned the name "Oxford of South India" for its long tradition of schools and colleges. From here the route leaves NH44 and turns west towards the hills.
The final leg follows the Thamirabarani upstream through paddy fields and coconut groves, with the Agasthyamalai range growing larger on the horizon. Ambasamudram is the "Gateway to Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve" and the turnoff for Manimuthar Dam. A few kilometres on, Papanasam sits at the foot of the hills, with the temple on the riverbank and the falls road climbing into the forest. Travellers heading to the Kerala trek base continue from Tirunelveli via Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram to Vithura and Bonacaud, an extra 220 kilometres, which your driver will plan as a separate day.
