Pichavaram Mangrove Forest
About fifteen kilometres east, near the coast, pichavaram mangrove forest is one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in India, a maze of narrow channels and small islands where the Vellar and Kollidam estuaries meet the Bay of Bengal. Rowing boats and motorboats run from the Tamil Nadu Tourism boat house. Choose the rowing boat: it slips into the narrow tunnels of roots that motorboats cannot reach. Veeranam Lake and Kattumannarkoil
About 25 kilometres southwest, Veeranam Lake is a tenth-century Chola reservoir built in the time of Rajaditya Chola that still supplies drinking water to Chennai. It is also the lake where Kalki's Ponniyin Selvan opens. The nearby town of Kattumannarkoil holds the Veeranarayana Perumal Temple, birthplace of the Vaishnava acharya Nathamuni.
Vaitheeswaran Koil
Around 25 kilometres south, Shiva is worshipped here as Vaidyanathar, the divine healer, and many families come to pray for recovery from illness. It is also the Angaraka Sthalam among the nine Navagraha temples, dedicated to Mars, and the town is famous for Nadi astrology. Its Brihadisvara Temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples, alongside Thanjavur and Darasuram. The vimana is slightly smaller than Thanjavur's but more graceful, and the monolithic Nandi and the lion-faced well are worth the walk. The site is rarely crowded.
Poompuhar and Tharangambadi
Poompuhar, about 40 kilometres southeast, was Kaveripoompattinam, the great Chola port described in the Tamil epic Silappathikaram. Continue another 25 kilometres south to Tharangambadi, the old Danish settlement of Tranquebar, where Dansborg Fort has faced the sea since 1620. Together they make a relaxed coastal day.

The bangalore to chidambaram distance is approximately 370 kilometres via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai, Gingee, Villupuram and Panruti. Driving time is 7 to 8 hours, or around 9 hours with breakfast and a darshan stop at Tiruvannamalai. The coastal route via Pondicherry and Cuddalore is slightly longer at about 385 kilometres.
Rates start from around Rs 30 per kilometre for a 12 to 14 seater AC mini bus and vary with seating capacity, AC or non-AC, and the number of days. Outstation hire carries a minimum of 300 kilometres per day. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance, while toll and parking, Tamil Nadu interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are charged separately. The final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and every item appears in the written quote.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking and reserves the specific mini bus for your dates. It is paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, a receipt follows within 30 minutes, and the balance is settled at the end of the trip.
It is technically possible, but we do not recommend it. A round trip of about 740 kilometres means 15 to 16 hours of driving and almost no time at the temple, and a late return adds driver bata after 9:45 PM. Most groups plan two to four days so they can see the temple properly and add Pichavaram, Vaitheeswaran Koil or Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
Yes. Travelling from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu requires an interstate permit, which is billed at actuals. We arrange it before departure, and it is checked at the Attibele border just before Hosur. The driver handles all the formalities.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated with push-back seats. Since Chidambaram is a single day's drive, we plan it as a daytime journey with comfortable halts along the way.
November to February is the most pleasant season, with cooler weather and the best birdlife at Pichavaram. Arudra Darshan in December or January, Natyanjali around Maha Shivaratri and Aani Thirumanjanam in June or July are the biggest festivals, so book at least four to six weeks ahead for those dates. October and November can bring heavy north-east monsoon rain and occasional cyclone warnings on the coast, and our team checks conditions before departure.

Multi-day hire is billed on total kilometres and hours with a daily minimum plus driver allowance, and we quote the whole trip as one figure once you share your plan.
Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure costs nothing, and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. The charge is 10 percent of the total fare between 48 and 72 hours, 25 percent between 24 and 48 hours, and 50 percent between 12 and 24 hours. Multi-day outstation trips require a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund. Date changes made more than 24 hours in advance are accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability.
