Kaup Lighthouse
The kaup lighthouse was built by the British in 1901 and still guides ships along this coast. The quiet village has preserved his ancestral home. On the hill beside it stands the Kunjarugiri Durga Temple, reached by a flight of steps, with panoramic views over paddy fields towards the sea. A peaceful half-day stop for pilgrims and families.
Padubidri Blue Flag Beach
Twelve kilometres south, the Padubidri End Point beach is one of India's Blue Flag certified beaches, an international recognition for cleanliness, safety and environmental management. It has clean washrooms, walkways, lifeguards and a well-maintained sand strip. For families with young children, it is one of the most comfortable beach stops on the entire coast.
Mattu Beach
A short drive north of Kaup near Katapady, Mattu is a village beach where a river meets the sea, creating a calm backwater on one side and surf on the other. The village is also famous for Mattu Gulla, a round green brinjal with a GI tag, grown only in this soil.
Udupi Sri Krishna Matha
Thirteen kilometres north, the Sri Krishna Matha in Udupi is one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage centres in South India. Devotees view the deity through the Kanakana Kindi, a small silver-plated window. The temple is managed by eight mathas in rotation under the Paryaya system. Stay for a meal at the temple and do not leave Udupi without trying a masala dosa in the town where it is believed to have originated.
Malpe Beach and St Mary's Island
About 20 kilometres away, Malpe is the liveliest beach in the district, with a busy fishing harbour, water sports and a sea walk. From here boats run to St Mary's Island, known for its rare hexagonal basalt rock columns formed by ancient volcanic activity and listed among the National Geological Monuments of India. Ferries do not operate during the monsoon, usually from June to mid-September.
Manipal and Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village
The university town of Manipal, around 18 kilometres away, offers the End Point viewpoint over the Swarna river valley and the Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village, where traditional houses from across India have been dismantled and rebuilt piece by piece. It is a favourite with school and college groups.

The twelfth century temples of Belur (38 km) and Halebidu (31 km), famous for their incredibly detailed soapstone carvings, are both within reach and were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas. The town itself is named after Hasanamba, whose temple opens only once a year during Deepavali, drawing huge crowds. Hassan has the best choice of restaurants on the route, and most drivers suggest a proper breakfast or early lunch here. Because the drive is around 400 kilometres each way, we recommend at least two nights. That allows a relaxed day for Kaup beach, the lighthouse and the Marigudi temples, and another for Udupi, Malpe and St Mary's Island. Three nights let you add Kateel, Dharmasthala or Kukke Subramanya on the way.
The sea at Kaup can be rough, and the rocks near the lighthouse are slippery. Swim only in areas marked safe by lifeguards and avoid the water entirely during the monsoon from June to September. For families with children, the Blue Flag beach at Padubidri, with lifeguards and marked swimming zones, is a safer choice.
October to March is the most pleasant season, with calm seas, clear skies and boats running to St Mary's Island. April and May are hot and humid, though evenings on the beach are still enjoyable. The monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain, rough seas and occasional ghat closures, although the Western Ghats drive is beautiful at this time.
