Athirappilly Falls
The main event. The athirappilly falls drop around 80 feet into a gorge ringed by forest, and there are two ways to see them: a paved walk to the top, where the river gathers speed over the rocks, and a steep stepped trail down to a viewpoint near the base, where the spray reaches you. The falls feature in films from Dil Se to Baahubali, and the ticket is also valid at Vazhachal.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Industrial Gateway to Tamil Nadu
The trip begins on Hosur Road past Electronic City, and this short first leg decides how the rest of the day goes. Before 6:00 AM the elevated expressway and the Attibele stretch take under an hour; leave at 8:30 AM and the same 40 kilometres can take nearly twice as long. Attibele is where your cab crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, and the interstate permit is checked at the border post, something our drivers handle routinely. Hosur itself is one of the largest industrial towns in the state, home to major two-wheeler, truck and aerospace component plants, and it is also a significant grower of cut roses for export, with greenhouses spread across the surrounding countryside. Most drivers take a tea break just beyond the town. From here on, the NH44 is a fast, well-maintained four-lane road.

Steel City of Tamil Nadu
A quick, straight stretch through dry farmland and small hills brings you to Dharmapuri, the turnoff for Hogenakkal Falls about 45 kilometres to the east. Hogenakkal, whose name means smoking rock in Kannada, is where the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu through a series of rocky gorges famous for coracle rides,. Continuing south, the highway descends into Salem, a large city ringed by the Shevaroy Hills and known as the Steel City for its steel plant, as well as for mangoes, sago and handloom silk. The hill station of Yercaud is a 30 kilometre climb from the city. On a direct run your driver takes the bypass and avoids city traffic entirely, but Salem’s highway plazas have clean washrooms and good food, which makes it a sensible mid-morning halt. From Salem the route leaves NH44 and turns west onto NH544 towards Coimbatore and Kerala. Elapsed time: around three and a half to four hours.
Turmeric City of India
NH544 runs west past Sankagiri, where a massive rock fort rises straight out of the plain; it was an important garrison under Tipu Sultan and later the British. The road then crosses the Kaveri at Kumarapalayam and Bhavani, where the Bhavani river joins the Kaveri at a sacred confluence marked by the Sangameswarar Temple, a spot many families on pilgrimage stop at briefly. Erode lies just south of the highway and is one of the largest turmeric markets in the world, which is why it is known as the Turmeric City, or sometimes the Yellow City. Bhavani is famous for its thick cotton carpets called jamakkalam. The highway itself stays on a bypass, so you see farms and warehouses rather than city streets. Elapsed time: roughly four and a half hours.

Manchester of South India
The road passes Perundurai and Vijayamangalam before reaching Avinashi, home to an old Shiva temple and the closest point to Tiruppur, just 15 kilometres south. Tiruppur is the Knitwear Capital of India, producing a large share of the country’s cotton knitwear exports, and its factory outlets are popular with travellers who want branded T-shirts and innerwear at export-surplus prices. Beyond Avinashi the highway skirts Coimbatore on the bypass. Coimbatore earned the name Manchester of South India from its cotton mills, and today it is a manufacturing and engineering hub with a pleasant climate thanks to the Palakkad Gap. It is the natural lunch halt and the best overnight option if you prefer to split the trip, with plenty of good hotels near the bypass. Elapsed time: about six and a half hours.

Granary of Kerala
Leaving Coimbatore, the road heads for the Palakkad Gap, a 30 kilometre wide break in the Western Ghats that has been the main land route between Tamil Nadu and Kerala for centuries. The Walayar check post marks the border into Kerala, where the Kerala interstate permit is verified; our drivers keep the documents ready so the stop is brief. Almost immediately the landscape changes. Dry Tamil Nadu plains give way to paddy fields, coconut palms and red-tiled houses, and Palakkad, the Granary of Kerala, spreads out in a patchwork of rice fields fed by the Malampuzha dam. Palakkad Fort, built by Hyder Ali in the 18th century, stands in the town centre and is one of the best-preserved forts in Kerala. Elapsed time: roughly seven and a half hours.

Cultural Capital of Kerala
The highway runs through Alathur and Vadakkanchery before climbing into the Kuthiran hills, where twin tunnels, the first road tunnels built in Kerala, now carry traffic through the ridge and have removed one of the worst bottlenecks on the old route. The Peechi dam and wildlife sanctuary lie just off the highway to the east. Beyond the tunnels you descend towards Thrissur, the Cultural Capital of Kerala, famous across India for Thrissur Pooram, when caparisoned elephants and massed percussion fill the city each April or May. Your cab uses the bypass rather than the city centre. Thrissur is the second sensible overnight halt, especially if you want to see the Vadakkunnathan Temple or Guruvayur, and it has the widest choice of hotels on the Kerala side. Elapsed time: roughly nine hours.

Niagara of India
The final leg runs south on NH544 through Puthukkad to Chalakudy, a busy market town on the Chalakudy river that also has the nearest railway station to the falls. Here your cab turns east onto the Chalakudy–Anamala Road, and within minutes the highway traffic falls away. The road winds through oil palm plantations and rubber estates, passes Thumboormuzhi and its hanging bridge, and then enters the forest proper, with tall trees closing overhead and the river running alongside. The last 30 kilometres take around an hour because the road is narrow and winding, and your driver will keep the speed down, since elephants and monkeys do cross here. You will hear the falls before you see them. Your driver can drop you at your resort first or go straight to the viewpoint if daylight allows. Elapsed time: ten to eleven hours.

Leaving Bangalore at 5:00 AM, this is how the journey usually goes. Distances are approximate and depend on your pickup point.
The Urbania crosses the Attibele border into Tamil Nadu at Hosur, which the British called Little England for its cool climate. Today it is an industrial town and a major centre for cut-flower rose farming. The Tamil Nadu permit is checked here, and an early start keeps the group ahead of factory traffic.
Mango orchards line NH44 as the road reaches Krishnagiri, one of India's biggest mango-growing districts. The Krishnagiri reservoir is visible from the highway. It is the usual breakfast stop, with large restaurants that can serve the group quickly.
Dharmapuri is the gateway to Hogenakkal, where the Kaveri crashes through rocky channels and coracles carry visitors close to the falls. On the Athirappilly route, the highway passes the town, so Hogenakkal is best saved for a separate trip.
At Salem, known for its steel plant, sago factories and silver anklets, the route leaves NH44 and turns west on NH544 towards Coimbatore. The bypass avoids city traffic, and the highway plazas here are a good mid-morning break.
Bhavani sits at Kooduthurai, where the Bhavani river meets the Kaveri, a sacred confluence called the Dakshina Triveni Sangamam with the Sangameswarar Temple on its banks. The town is also known for Bhavani jamakkalam, handwoven cotton carpets with a GI tag, sold in shops near the highway.
Coimbatore earned the name Manchester of South India from its textile mills, and today it is also a major hub for pumps, motors and engineering. The bypass keeps the Urbania out of city traffic, and lunch in Coimbatore is the natural midpoint of the journey.
After crossing into Kerala at Walayar, where the Kerala permit is checked, the road passes through the Palakkad Gap, the natural break in the Western Ghats. Palakkad is called the rice bowl of Kerala for its vast paddy fields, and its 18th-century fort, built by Hyder Ali, stands in the town centre.
Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala, home to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Vadakkunnathan Temple, where the spectacular Thrissur Pooram takes place. Afternoon traffic can be heavy, so the driver uses the bypass where possible.
Chalakudy is a busy town on the Chalakudy river and the turn-off for Athirappilly. From here, the road runs east through rubber and oil palm plantations and small villages before entering the forest. Supplies and snacks are best picked up here.
The last 30 kilometres follow the river into the forest to Athirappilly. Most groups check into a resort on the Athirappilly–Vazhachal road, and visit the falls either late in the afternoon or fresh the next morning, followed by Vazhachal, Charpa and the forest drive.

From June to October the falls are at their fullest and most dramatic. September to January brings pleasant weather with a good flow. In summer the falls are much smaller but the forest is still worth visiting.
No. Bathing and entering the river are prohibited because of strong currents and slippery rocks. Enjoy the falls from the marked viewpoints and paths.
