Places to Visit in Kollegal

Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki

Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki

The Cauvery divides around the island of Shivanasamudra and drops in two separate falls. Gaganachukki, on the Mandya side, is the taller and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge - a segmented cascade dropping into a deep ravine. Bharachukki, on the Chamarajanagar side, is broader, and steps lead down toward the base with coracle rides operating when water levels allow. They are around fifteen kilometres apart by road and both are worth seeing. Visit between August and January when the flow is strong; by March it thins considerably. Access and coracle operation depend on water levels and are periodically restricted for safety, so confirm close to your travel date.

The Shivanasamudra Power Station

The Shivanasamudra Power Station

A detail almost every visitor misses. The hydroelectric station at Shivanasamudra, commissioned in 1902, was the first of its kind in Asia, built to send power over a hundred kilometres to the Kolar Gold Fields - which made KGF one of the first places in the world to receive long-distance transmitted hydroelectric power, and Bangalore among the first Indian cities to be electrified. The station is still operational and completed a century of service in 2006. It is not a visitor attraction in the conventional sense and access is restricted, but understanding what it is changes how you look at the gorge, and it is genuinely one of the more significant pieces of industrial heritage in India.

Male Mahadeshwara Hills

Male Mahadeshwara Hills

MM Hills lies about seventy-five kilometres south-east of Kollegal, and the approach is the memorable part - seventy-seven hairpin bends climbing through the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple is dedicated to Male Mahadeshwara, a saint venerated as an incarnation of Shiva, and the oral epic sung in his honour is a major tradition in Kannada folk literature. It draws very large crowds during festivals. Visit early in the day. The road is narrow, the forest stretch has wildlife including elephants, and it is not a place to be driving after dark. An SUV is more comfortable than a sedan on this approach.

Bheemeshwari and the Cauvery Sanctuary

Bheemeshwari and the Cauvery Sanctuary

North of Kollegal along the Cauvery, the sanctuary holds a chain of riverside camps at Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi, best known for angling - the mahseer fishing here was internationally renowned, and is now strictly catch-and-release under conservation rules. Coracle rides, zip lines, river rafting and guided nature walks operate through Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Visit for a genuinely restful two days by the river, or as a day trip from Bangalore in its own right. These camps are reached off the Kanakapura road rather than from Kollegal town, which is worth knowing when planning the routing.

Talakadu and the Buried Temples

Talakadu and the Buried Temples

About forty kilometres west on the Cauvery, Talakadu is one of the strangest sites in Karnataka - a medieval town swallowed by shifting sand dunes, with temples buried under them for centuries and several since excavated. The Panchalinga Darshana, when five Shiva temples are visited together, is held here at intervals of around twelve years and draws enormous crowds. Visit for the sheer oddness of walking across sand dunes to reach Hoysala and Ganga-period stone temples set below ground level. Somanathapura, the third of the UNESCO-inscribed Hoysala temples, lies a further twenty-odd kilometres and pairs naturally with it.

The Kollegal Silk Looms

The Kollegal Silk Looms

The town has been a silk reeling, twisting and handloom weaving centre for generations, producing soft silk sarees on pit looms, historically supplying the Mysore royal household and once known particularly for its navilu or peacock border sarees. The Devanga and Padmasali communities are the traditional weavers, and most of the looms sit inside the town itself rather than in industrial units outside it. Visit if you have any interest in textiles - watching a jacquard pit loom working is a genuinely absorbing half hour, and buying directly from a weaver is both cheaper and more interesting than a showroom. Ask us to arrange it at booking, since it is not a signposted tourist activity.

Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement, Gundal Dam and Maradi Gudda

Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement, Gundal Dam and Maradi Gudda

Three local features almost no visitor knows about. Dhondenling, established in 1974 on around three thousand acres near Kollegal, is one of the Tibetan settlements founded in Karnataka after 1959, with monastery buildings, prayer flags and a resident community - an unexpected thing to find in the Cauvery basin and worth an hour. Gundal Dam, around fifteen kilometres out, is a quiet reservoir with hill views and almost no crowds. Maradi Gudda is the small hill overlooking the town that gives the standard view across Kollegal. None of these will fill a day, but together they make the town itself worth more than a fuel stop.

Urbania Packages for Every Group

Every quotation is built around what the group actually needs rather than picked off a fixed menu. The tiers below describe how we normally structure bangalore to kollegal urbania enquiries on this corridor.

Family Urbania Package

The dominant booking here, and usually a Shivanasamudra day rather than a Kollegal one. The 12 and 13 seater are the usual choice for extended families travelling together. We plan these around water levels and daylight: the falls first thing while the light is good and before the day-tripper crowds arrive from Bangalore, then Talakadu or the Kollegal looms in the afternoon. Where a family wants both Gaganachukki and Bharachukki — and they should, since the two are quite different — we build in the fifteen-kilometre transfer between them rather than leaving it as a surprise on the day. Child seats can be arranged with notice. Our 13 seater urbania rent bangalore configuration is the most requested size on this route.

Corporate Urbania Package

For team outings to the Cauvery camps, which are among the most popular short offsites from Bangalore precisely because they are close, genuinely restful and need no organising beyond the booking. Documentation is handled up front: GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice at quotation stage for purchase-order approval, monthly consolidated billing and thirty-day credit terms for signed accounts. For camp bookings we route via Kanakapura and Sathanur rather than through Kollegal town, since the camps lie off that road and the difference is close to an hour each way. Our corporate travels bangalore desk handles standing accounts and repeat offsite bookings.

Luxury and VIP Urbania Package

For senior family groups, guest hosting and travellers who want the day to be comfortable rather than merely short. This tier draws on the 15, 16 and 17 seater end of the fleet with the full recliner and dual-zone specification, a chauffeur in formal attire where the occasion calls for it, and vehicle allocation confirmed by registration number rather than by class. On this route the practical value is suspension and cabin quality: the falls approach roads, the Talakadu sand tracks and the two-lane run south of Kanakapura are none of them the smooth highway the first hour might lead you to expect. See the luxury urbania rental bangalore fleet and the 16 seater urbania configuration. For MM Hills legs we will still recommend stepping down a size.

Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment

Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for the Bangalore to Kollegal Urbania corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged, and everything inside it is stated before you confirm.

Advance payment: 20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.

Included in the Quoted Fare

•     Base fare and fuel charges

•     Driver allowance

Not Included in the Quoted Fare

•     Toll and parking charges

•     Interstate tax

•     Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra

•     Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage

•     GST

Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel cover where required. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences.

Two points are specific to this route. First, coracle charges at Bharachukki, viewpoint and parking fees at the falls, forest entry at MM Hills and any activity fees at the Cauvery camps are all paid on site and sit outside the vehicle fare — we will tell you the expected order of cost, but they are not ours to bill and we add no margin to them. Second, Kollegal is within Karnataka so no interstate permit arises, though one applies the moment an itinerary continues into Tamil Nadu, which is closer here than most travellers realise since the state border runs along the eastern edge of the taluk. Where a Hogenakkal or Dhimbam extension is planned we arrange the permit in advance rather than discovering it at a check post.

How to Book a Force Urbania for Rent in Bangalore — Step by Step

Booking a Force Urbania for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

•     Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

•     Share these details when you make contact:

◦      Travel date

◦      Bangalore pickup location — area or landmark such as Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, a hotel name or a tech park

◦      Destination or your full itinerary

◦      Number of passengers

◦      Preferred vehicle

•     For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.

•     For luxury vehicles such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Rolls-Royce, also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding or VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.

•     On this route, also tell us which sites you want — falls, MM Hills, Talakadu or the Cauvery camps — since they sit on different roads and the routing is decided by that choice.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

•     Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.

•     The quote clearly itemizes every charge:

◦      Vehicle hire rate — Rs/km or flat package

◦      Driver allowance — Rs 400 to 1,000 per day depending on vehicle class

◦      Applicable toll estimates

◦      Any interstate permit if applicable — Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati

•     No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.

•     For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.

•     If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance

•     Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone.

•     A 20 percent advance payment confirms the booking.

•     Payment options: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link.

•     Advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

•     Your confirmation includes, all in writing:

◦      Driver name and mobile number

◦      Vehicle registration

◦      Departure time

◦      Pickup location

◦      Full billing breakdown

•     For luxury vehicles such as the Rolls-Royce Ghost, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class, the advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand — wedding season from November to February, and New Year.

Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early

•     Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure.

•     For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.

•     The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled and ready.

•     For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire.

•     The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.

•     During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments and Bangalore traffic navigation.

•     At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance.

•     Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick Booking for Hire: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your vehicle preference, Bangalore pickup location, destination and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kollegal Urbania

The bangalore to kollegal distance is around 135 km via NH 948 through Kanakapura and Malavalli, which is the direct line, or closer to 150 km via Ramanagara, Channapatna and Maddur on faster road. Either takes 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes. Figures published elsewhere range up to 160 km depending on which route is measured. Neither line has a ghat section, which makes this one of the more relaxed outstation runs from Bangalore for a large vehicle.

Urbania fare starts around Rs 12,700. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.

Our Urbania fleet runs from 8 up to 17 seats, and as a working rule you should book one seat more than your headcount so nobody shares space with the luggage. Groups of eight to ten take the 9 or 10 seater, eleven to thirteen the 13 seater, and fourteen to seventeen the 15, 16 or 17 seater. Above seventeen we move you to a minibus rather than sending two vehicles. We do not operate a sleeper bus service. For overnight group travel on this corridor we recommend either a Volvo or Benz seater coach from our 27 to 50 seater fleet, or an Urbania with a night halt.

Yes, and you should, because they are quite different. Gaganachukki on the Mandya side is the taller and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge. Bharachukki on the Chamarajanagar side is broader, with steps down toward the base and coracle rides when water levels allow. They sit around fifteen kilometres apart by road and are not visible from one another, so the transfer between them has to be in the plan rather than improvised. Visit between August and January for the strongest flow; by March it thins considerably and the trip is better built around something else.

It can, but we would rather you did not. Seventy-seven hairpin bends on a narrow forest road is manageable in the largest variants and genuinely tight, and for that leg specifically we recommend the 12 or 13 seater. The falls, Talakadu and Cauvery camp legs are all fine in any size we run. If MM Hills is central to your plan we raise this at the quotation stage rather than letting you find out on the third bend, and where a group is too large for the smaller variant we would rather split it across two vehicles than pretend the road is wider than it is. Start early either way — the forest stretch has elephants and it is not a road for after dark.

No, and this catches people out. The camps at Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi are reached down tracks leading west from around Sathanur, roughly 85 km out, rather than from Kollegal town at all. A camp booking therefore diverges from a falls booking a good fifty kilometres before the end of this route. We route camp itineraries via Kanakapura and Sathanur and confirm the turn-off with you at the quotation stage. Combining a camp stay with the falls is perfectly possible but works far better across two days than squeezed into one.

Yes, and it is the most rewarding half hour available in the town itself. Kollegal has been a silk reeling and handloom weaving centre for generations, producing soft silk sarees on pit looms and once known particularly for its navilu or peacock border sarees. Watching a jacquard pit loom working is genuinely absorbing, and buying directly from a weaver is both cheaper and more interesting than a showroom. It is not a signposted tourist activity and the looms sit inside residential lanes, so ask us to arrange it at booking rather than turning up and hoping. A group of fifteen needs a little notice for this in particular.

A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your date. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing. For long weekends in the monsoon season, when the falls are at their best and demand peaks, a higher advance may be requested and Urbania availability tightens well ahead of the date.

Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. Coracle rides, viewpoint and parking fees, MM Hills forest entry and Cauvery camp activity fees are paid on site and sit outside the fare. Kollegal is within Karnataka so no interstate permit arises, though one applies if the itinerary continues into Tamil Nadu, which is closer here than most travellers expect.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For school excursions to the falls and for adventure activities at the Cauvery camps we recommend it particularly, and a group policy is usually inexpensive.

October to March for comfortable weather across the district. For Shivanasamudra specifically, August to January is when the falls justify the journey — the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon flow is dramatic, and by March the cascades reduce to a fraction of it. If your trip is built around the waterfalls, the season matters considerably more than the weather does. If it is built around MM Hills or the Cauvery camps, the drier months are easier going and the roads are more predictable.
