Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Theyyam itself is a ritual performance in which the costumed performer, drawn largely from specific communities, is understood to become the deity and is addressed as such - elaborate headdresses, face painting, fire and drumming, staged at village shrines usually through the night. Cricket is said to have been first played in India here by British traders. And Thalassery biryani - short-grain kaima rice, distinct spicing, cooked separately and layered - is the most celebrated of Kerala biryanis. There is also Thalassery Fort from 1708 and Overbury Folly, a hilltop viewpoint. Visit for the food alone if nothing else; a meal here is a legitimate reason to break the journey.
The Kannur Handlooms
Kannur is one of the major handloom centres of India, with weaving cooperatives around Kanhirode and elsewhere in the district producing furnishing fabric, bed linen and shirting supplied nationally and exported. The looms are worked in cooperative sheds rather than tourist showrooms, and visiting one is a genuinely interesting hour - the scale of a working handloom shed with dozens of looms running at once is not what most visitors expect. The Kerala border comes shortly after Kutta and the change is immediate - wider road, more traffic, and the dense evergreen character of the Wayanad plateau. Kattikulam follows, with the turn for Kuruva Island a few kilometres off the highway - a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, reached by raft, and worth a half day if the itinerary allows. It holds the tomb of Pazhassi Raja, the Kottayam ruler who led a guerrilla campaign against the East India Company across these forests for more than a decade before his death in 1805 - a significant figure in Kerala history and commemorated with a memorial and museum. It is also the last town of any size before the ghat, and a sensible place to stop.
Thalassery
Birthplace of the Indian Circus.
The Periya ghat carries the road off the Wayanad plateau down into Kannur district through forest, in a sequence of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is a gentler descent than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and generally less congested, but it is still a ghat and our drivers take it at a measured pace, in daylight wherever the schedule allows. The Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery route runs longer at roughly 360 to 380 km. Either takes 7 to 8 hours 30 minutes with one proper halt, and a large vehicle is at the slower end of that. Groups of eight to ten take the 9 or 10 seater, eleven to thirteen the 13 seater, and fourteen to seventeen the 15, 16 or 17 seater. Above seventeen we move you to a minibus or coach. We do not operate a sleeper bus service. For late departures, poor surface reports, or itineraries that include Wayanad anyway, we use the longer Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery route, which carries its own Bandipur night closure from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The Periya ghat is the descent from the Wayanad plateau into Kannur district — winding, forested, with a number of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends, but considerably gentler than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and usually less congested. There is a third route into Kannur through Kottiyoor and the Palchuram section that is markedly steeper, and we do not use it in a large vehicle without a specific reason. What we will not do is take the ghat after dark on a schedule that has already slipped.

No, and we are firm about this. Muzhappilangad is the longest drive-in beach in Asia and vehicles are permitted on the sand, but driving conditions depend entirely on tide and sand, stretches can be soft, and a heavy people mover carrying fifteen people is exactly the wrong vehicle to find that out with. We park at the entrance and you walk on, which is what most visitors do in any case. Late afternoon into sunset is when the beach is at its best. If driving on the sand is a specific ambition, hire a light local vehicle for it and keep the Urbania on the road.
The main season runs roughly December to April, though the Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple performs Theyyam daily through the year and is the reliable option outside it. Performances at village shrines are local events rather than ticketed shows — schedules are set kavu by kavu, are not centrally published, and usually run through the night. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. On a route through forest country with a ghat descent we recommend it more strongly than on ordinary highway trips, and for a group a policy is usually inexpensive.
October to March for weather, and December to April if Theyyam is the reason for the trip — the two overlap conveniently. June to September is the southwest monsoon, when Malabar takes very heavy rainfall, the ghat sections are at their most demanding and Theyyam is largely out of season. The beaches are at their best from November onward, and Muzhappilangad in particular depends on tide and sand conditions that are far more reliable outside the monsoon.
