How a Bus Quote Is Worked Out: A Guide for Groups

Two bus quotes for the same trip can look very different, even when the final bill ends up similar. The reason is that operators split the cost in different ways. Once you know the parts of a quote, comparing them becomes easy.

The parts of a bus quote

• Per km rate: charged on the distance from our garage and back.

• Minimum km per day: outstation trips are billed for a minimum distance each day, even if you drive less. For most buses this is 300 km a day; for Volvo and Benz coaches it is 400 km.

• Driver allowance: a fixed amount per day for the driver's food and stay.

• Tolls and parking: paid at actual cost.

• State permit: needed when the bus enters another state, paid at actual cost.

Local packages

Inside the city, buses are usually booked in packages such as 8 hours and 80 km. If you go over, the extra hours and km are charged separately. For weddings and office events, a package is often cheaper than per km billing.

How to compare two quotes

Ask both operators for the total for your exact route and dates, including allowance, permit and an estimate of tolls. Then compare totals, not per km rates. A low per km rate with a high minimum can cost more than a slightly higher rate with no surprises.

What changes the total

Bus size, AC or non-AC, season, and how many days the bus is away from Bangalore. Wedding season and long weekends are busy, so book early to get the bus you want.

Seat types and AC: 2+2, 2+1 or a luxury coach

"2+2" means two seats on each side of the aisle; it is the standard layout in our 29 to 50 seater buses, with pushback seats and AC. If you want to save on a short city trip, standard buses also come as non-AC, with the rate in the quote. "2+1" means two seats on one side and one on the other, so every seat has more room; our 27 and 30 seater executive buses are 2+1 and always AC. For long overnight trips, the Volvo, BharatBenz and Mercedes-Benz coaches have 2+2 recliners with air suspension, which gives the smoothest ride. They are always AC.

A worked example without numbers

Say you book a 40 seater for a two day trip to Coorg. The quote starts with the km: from our garage to your pickup, to Coorg, the local sightseeing, and back to the garage. If that total is less than the minimum km per day, you pay the minimum. Then add the driver allowance for two days, the night halt charge for one night, the tolls on the route, the parking fees at the places you visit and the state entry tax if you cross into another state. Ask for the quote in exactly this order, and nothing will surprise you at the end.

Costs that belong to the trip, not the vehicle

Some costs belong to the trip, not to the bus. Entry tickets, guide fees, food for the group and the driver's room on a night halt are common examples. Some operators include the driver's room in the night halt charge, some do not. Ask the question before you confirm. We write it down in the booking message so both sides know what was agreed.

Why a cheaper quote can cost more

A low per km rate can come with a high minimum per day, a garage that is far from your pickup, or a bus that is older than the one in the photo. Compare the total for your full trip, not the rate per km. Ask which bus will come, how old it is and whether the photo is of the real vehicle. How to ask for a quote that is easy to compare

Send every operator the same details: the date, the start time, the pickup and drop areas, every place you want to visit, the night halts and the number of people. Ask each of them for a quote that shows the km, the minimum per day, the driver allowance, the night halt, tolls, parking and permits as separate lines. Why is the trip billed from your garage?

Because the bus starts and ends its day there. Our garages are in Hoskote, HRBR Layout and Mysore, and we send the bus from the nearest one.

Are tolls included in the per km rate?

No. Tolls, parking and state permits are paid at actual cost on the trip.

What is the minimum km for a Volvo?

Volvo and Benz coaches are billed at least 400 km per day on outstation trips. Other buses are billed at least 300 km.

Where are the current rates?

What does 2+2 and 2+1 mean in a bus?

Do you charge extra for a late return?

Extra km and extra hours are charged as per the rate on the booking. The driver will tell you if the trip is going over the plan.
