Bangalore to Belur-Halebidu-Shravanabelagola Circuit: Planning It as a One-Day Tempo Traveller Trip

If you have ever tried explaining the Hoysala temples to someone who has never seen them, you already know words fall a little short. Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola sit inside the Hassan district of Karnataka, roughly 220 km from Bangalore, and together they cover almost a thousand years of stone carving, Jain history and Hoysala architecture in one loop. The good part is that all three can be done in a single day if the vehicle, the route and the timings are planned properly.

This is exactly where most people go wrong. They either underestimate the driving distance and end up rushing through Shravanabelagola in the dark, or they take two separate cars and lose half the group at every chai stop. For a family, a friend circle, a college batch or a corporate team, booking a tempo traveller rent from Bangalore solves both problems at once. Everyone leaves together, stops together, and gets home together.

The Trip at a Glance

Total round-trip distance: roughly 440 to 460 km depending on the exact route taken
Total time on the road, including sightseeing: around 12 to 13 hours
Best starting time from Bangalore: 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM
Route: Bangalore, NH75 towards Hassan, Channarayapatna, Belur, Halebidu, Shravanabelagola, back to Bangalore
Belur to Halebidu: about 16 km, 25 to 30 minutes
Halebidu/Belur to Shravanabelagola: roughly 80 to 90 km via Channarayapatna, about 1.5 to 2 hours

Because the loop covers three separate towns and involves a fair bit of walking at each stop, the day genuinely runs long. Starting late is the single biggest reason people end up cutting Shravanabelagola short, so an early departure matters more here than on most one-day trips out of Bangalore.

Why a Tempo Traveller Beats Multiple Cars on This Route

Anyone who has organised a group outing knows the real headache is never the destination, it is the coordination. Two or three cars mean two or three drivers, two or three fuel stops, and someone always lagging behind at the Nelamangala junction. Going for a tempo traveller on rent removes all of that. One driver, one route, one group that steps off the vehicle together at Chennakeshava Temple and climbs the 600-odd steps at Vindhyagiri hill together.

There is also the comfort angle. The drive from Bangalore to Belur alone takes about four hours one way. Even a compact Bangalore to Belur tempo traveller gives every passenger a proper captain seat with a footrest, not a cramped middle-row seat in a sedan. On a day this long, that difference shows up by the time you are climbing down from the Gomateshwara statue in the afternoon sun.

The Route and Which Group Sizes Book It Most

Most families and friend groups doing this circuit land somewhere between 12 and 13 people, which happens to be the sweet spot on pricing too. A 12 seater tempo traveller usually works out to the most cost-efficient option per head for this exact headcount, since it sits at the lower end of the per-km slab compared to the bigger vehicles.

Whatever size you end up booking, the actual process of tempo traveller hire stays the same. You share the travel date, pickup point and headcount, and the team matches you to a vehicle instead of you having to guess between seaters on your own.

Hour-by-Hour Plan for the Day

5:30 AM - Pickup from your Bangalore location. Early departure matters here because of the long drive ahead. If you're a larger office group or an extended family, a 16 seater tempo traveller at this hour still means one pickup point instead of coordinating five different cars in the dark.

9:30 AM - Arrive in Belur. Spend around 90 minutes at the Chennakeshava Temple complex, taking in the carved pillars and the famous Madanika sculptures.

11:15 AM - Short 25-minute drive to Halebidu. Spend about an hour at the Hoysaleshwara Temple, which many visitors find even more intricately carved than Belur.

12:30 PM - Lunch break at Hassan or Belur, depending on the route your driver takes.

2:00 PM - Drive towards Shravanabelagola, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away.

3:45 PM - Climb Vindhyagiri hill to see the Gomateshwara statue. This takes the most time and physical effort of the day, so budget close to two hours here. For a full college batch or a wedding party tagging this onto their trip, the17 seater tempo traveller keeps everyone climbing together instead of splitting into smaller batches.

6:00 PM - Start the return drive to Bangalore.

10:00 PM to 10:30 PM - Arrive back in Bangalore, tired but with a full day of Hoysala history behind you.

This timeline assumes an early start and a driver familiar with the Hassan district roads, which is exactly why booking with an operator that already knows the route matters more than it seems.

What You Will Actually See at Each Stop?

Belur's Chennakeshava Temple was built in 1117 CE and is still an active temple, which means it has a different energy compared to a pure monument. The star attraction is the set of Madanika brackets, sculpted female figures in various poses that circle the outer walls.

Halebidu, once the capital of the Hoysala empire, has the Hoysaleshwara Temple, which many art historians consider more detailed than Belur despite being unfinished. The temple was never fully completed after repeated invasions, and that incomplete quality is part of what makes it fascinating.

Shravanabelagola is a different experience altogether. The 57-foot monolithic Gomateshwara statue sits atop Vindhyagiri hill, and reaching it means climbing roughly 600 steps, barefoot, as per temple tradition. If your group has elderly members or anyone who tires easily on a long day, a luxury tempo traveller makes the hours in between far less draining, with better cushioning and legroom for the long stretches on NH75.

Estimated Cost for a Group Trip

Costs vary by vehicle size and whether you book a standard or luxury vehicle, but here is a rough sense of what a group can expect for the full round trip, including fuel, driver allowance and tolls:

Group size	Vehicle	Approx. round trip cost
8	8 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 6,500 to Rs 9,500
9	9 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 7,200 to Rs 10,000

12	12 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 6,500 to Rs 11,500
13	13 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 6,500 to Rs 12,000
14	14 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,500
15	15 Seater Tempo Traveller	Rs 8,000 to Rs 13,000

These are approximate figures for a one-day round trip and can shift depending on the exact pickup point in Bangalore and the season. For an exact quote, it is always worth calling or WhatsApping the operator directly with your dates and headcount rather than relying on averages.

Booking Steps for Your Tempo Traveller

Tell us your plan. Give Tejas Tours & Travels a call or drop a WhatsApp on +91 99802 77773. Mention your travel date, where in Bangalore you'd like to be picked up, and how many people are coming along.
Get a written quote. You will receive a quote covering the vehicle rate, driver allowance and toll estimate, usually within a couple of hours.
Confirm with an advance. A partial advance payment locks in your vehicle for the date, whether that's a small hatchback-replacing group or a full 13 seater tempo traveller for a bigger crew.
Meet your driver. The vehicle and driver details are shared before departure, and the driver arrives at your pickup point ahead of schedule.

Ready-Made Package Option

If you would rather not plan the stops and timings yourself, Tejas Tours & Travels also runs a curated Belur-Halebeedu-Sharvanabelagola one day trip package from Bangalore that covers all three sites with a fixed itinerary. For travellers who want more breathing room and a slightly less rushed pace, there is also a Belur-Halebeedu-Sharvanabelagola trip package with a more relaxed schedule. Both are useful if you would rather hand over the planning and just show up for the drive.

Best Time to Visit This Circuit

October to February is the most comfortable window, with cooler mornings that make the long walk up Vindhyagiri hill far less punishing. Summer months bring harsh afternoon heat, especially during the Shravanabelagola climb, so an early start becomes even more important if you are travelling between March and May. Monsoon season, roughly June to September, adds greenery to the drive through Hassan district but also brings the risk of slippery temple steps, so footwear matters more on a wet day.

A Few Practical Tips

Carry socks if you can, since the stone floors and steps at all three temples get uncomfortably hot in peak sun and the walk to Vindhyagiri hill is done entirely barefoot per tradition. Keep water bottles handy, particularly for the Shravanabelagola climb, and pace the group so no one feels rushed on the way up. Even a small gathering of five or six friends can book a tempo traveller for rent rather than splitting into two cabs, which usually costs about the same and removes the whole headache of two drivers texting each other about where to stop next.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How far is Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola from Bangalore?

Belur is the farthest point, sitting about 220 km away, which takes roughly four hours by road. From there it's a short 16 km hop to Halebidu. Shravanabelagola adds another 80 to 90 km via Channarayapatna. Add it all up for the round trip and you're looking at 440 to 460 km for the day.

2. Can we actually finish all three places in one day?

People do it every week, but only if they leave early. 5:30 AM from Bangalore gives you enough cushion to see everything without rushing through Shravanabelagola at the end. Start any later and something usually gets cut short.

3. Which vehicle works best for a group doing this circuit?

A tempo traveller, hands down, if there are 8 or more of you. It keeps the whole group in one place instead of splitting across cars, and the seats hold up a lot better than a sedan does over a 12-hour day.

4. What will a vehicle for this trip roughly cost us?

Depends entirely on how many seats you need. Smaller groups are looking at somewhere around Rs 7,500, and it climbs up to about Rs 15,500 for the bigger vehicles. That's fuel, driver allowance and tolls all included. Best to just call and get a number for your exact headcount rather than going by a range.

5. Is it worth the extra distance to add Shravanabelagola, or should we stick to just Belur and Halebidu?

Honestly, go for all three. Belur and Halebidu are both about temple carvings and Hoysala architecture, so they start to feel similar after a point. Shravanabelagola is a completely different kind of stop, the giant Gomateshwara statue and the climb up to it, and most people who've done the full loop say that's the part they remember most.

6. Do we need tickets or any advance booking for the temples?

No, none of the three need advance booking. Just walk in. The one thing worth checking is the Shravanabelagola festival calendar, since the Mahamastakabhisheka event brings in massive crowds and you'd want to plan around that if it falls near your travel dates.

7. What should we wear, especially for the Shravanabelagola climb?

Something loose and comfortable, since you're climbing close to 600 steps. And no footwear allowed on the hill itself, that's tradition, so pack a pair of socks if the stone gets too hot to walk on barefoot.

8. Will this trip be too much for elderly family members?

Belur and Halebidu are fine, not much walking involved there. Shravanabelagola is the tough one because of the steps. There's a palanquin service at the base of the hill for anyone who can't manage the climb on foot, so it's not a dealbreaker, just something to plan for ahead of time.

9. Should we spend extra on a luxury vehicle for this trip, or is standard fine?

Standard works fine for most groups. But if you've got a 12 to 13 hour day ahead with a lot of sitting between stops, the extra cushioning and legroom in a luxury option does make a real difference, especially on the drive back when everyone's tired and just wants to doze off.

10. What exactly do we get when we book with Tejas Tours & Travels?

The vehicle, a driver, fuel, and the usual tolls, all covered. You'll get everything confirmed in writing once you get your quote, so there's nothing to guess about later. Call +91 99802 77773 or write to info@tejastravels.com and someone will work out the rate for your dates and group size.
